Cedarbrae CI Parent Council Meeting
Monday January 29, 2018
 
Present:  Jason Monteith (Vice-Principal), Michael Barnes (Vice-Principal), Victor Saliba (Chair) , Renee Massop (Co-Chair), Carol Collinson (Secretary), Khalil Rahman and Bilal Mohideen (SAC presidents), Michelle Cole-Kennedy, Conrad Stewart, Rory Frame, Zuleikha Mohideen
 
Meeting called to order: 6.45 PM
 
Welcome and Introductions:
  • Chair, Victor, welcomed everyone to the meeting. Each attendee introduced themselves.
 
Minutes of last meeting approved by Victor and seconded by Michelle Cole-Kennedy.
 
Student Activity Council (SAC) Update: Khalil and Bilal
  • Talent show was a success.  There were 25 acts.
  • Grade 8 Information event Dec. 7: 600 students participated
  • Prom is scheduled for May 10
  • Semi-formal Feb.15,  2018: ticket sales were down
  • Valentine’s Day: selling flowers and candy grams
 
 
Chair and Co-Chair Updates: Victor Saliba
 
  • Bylaws and Code of Ethics: 
    Parent Council should develop Bylaws and a Code of Ethics to have and follow. Bylaws are standard at the high school level. We should work toward preparing a By-law by September 2018.
 
  • We observed a few moments of silence to remember the passing of Mr. Rick George Harwood and the First Anniversary of the Quebec Mosque Massacre.
 
  • School Statement of Needs - to be updated
    • Victor has prepared a draft and sent to council members for comments
 
  • PRO Grant :  approved for $1000.00
    • Need to plan an information night before Jun 2018
    • Funds can be used for refreshments and materials
    • Topics: STEM or mental health
    • Victor to send survey to parents to see what topic they prefer

  • CCI Website:  out of date
    • Council minutes, agenda and dates of meetings should be posted on the CCI website
    • Safe and Caring School’s committee meetings should be advertised on the website.  The 3 main goals of this committee: 1. Children’s mental health and wellbeing, 2. Gender based violence prevention, 3. Relationship engagement between staff and students, student voice. The next meeting is scheduled for March 22, 2018. The goal is to encourage parents to attend these meetings.
    • Jason commented that it would be easy to post these items on the website. The internet provider was switched for security reasons and these items didn’t get posted.

  • SRO Program discontinued:  Victor sent final report to parents
    • Michael Barnes (VP) commented that the level of incidents has plateaued.  A longer time is needed to observe communication with police before making any conclusions.
 
Principal’s Report:

  • CCI won money last year for new technology.  Touch screen TVs were bought for the conference room.
  • Credit Rescue Program: Jan. 30, 2018
    Retake of culminating projects or exams for junior students. Parents are notified if their child is involved.
  • Grade 8 Information Night: competition for students.  Looking for ways to promote French program
  • Course Selection assembly: Feb. 8, 2018
    • Course selection to be completed by March Break.
  • Teachers retiring: 2-3 will be replaced.
  • Mr. Harwood’s death – grief councillors were available to his students.  CCI is looking at a memorial BBQ or tech award.

Jason Monteith (VP)
  • Activities in the school:      
    • Junior and senior boys basketball,
    •  Junior and senior girls volleyball,
    • Junior and senior mixed indoor volleyball
    • Open Mike Night – show case talent
    • Drama night – end of Feb.
    • Black History assembly - end of Feb.
    • DECA: Feb. 8, CCI hosting
      business and leadership.
    • MADD Canada: addressed senior students Feb. 9th about drinking and driving under the influence
  • Leaf Program: translation of school agenda for Syrian families
    • Approx. 30 students
    • Evening presentation
  • Equity: bias within teachers
    • Working with organization “Facing History and Ourselves”
    • Bias training for teachers
    • It’s purpose is to create a safer and more inclusive environment in classes.
 
Question/Comments
  • Positive feedback from W.G. Millar P.S. re a well-planned grade 8 information night
  • High chlorine levels in the pool in Nov.  Caretaker shocked the pool and tested the chlorine. The levels were acceptable, but the pool was closed for a couple of days.
 
Other Business
  • Council booth at Parent teacher interviews and Moving on Up Day to engage parents

Parent Council Meeting

Monday November 27, 2017

Present: Paul Ambrose (Principal), Victor Saliba (Chair) , Renee Massop (Co-Chair), Carol Collinson (Secretary), Kate Gosine (Co-Secretary), Michelle Cole-Kennedy , Conrad Stewart, Leslie Samuel, Khalil and Bilal (SAC presidents)
Meeting called to order: 6.35 PM

Welcome and Introductions:
 Chair, Victor, welcomed everyone to the meeting. Each attendee introduced themselves.

Minutes of last meeting approved by Victor and seconded by Carol Collinson.

Student Activity Council (SAC) Update: Khalil and Bilal
 Lazer Quest fundraiser is planned for 2nd semester
 Talent show is planned for before the winter break
 Grade 8 Information event: morning for new students and evening for parents scheduled for Dec. 7
 Prom is scheduled for May 10
 Semi-formal is scheduled for Feb. 2018

Chair and Co-Chair Updates: Victor Saliba
 AGM- Community Use of School Space: Nov. 28, 2017 @ TDSB head office, 5050 Yonge St.
 SRO program: discontinued, but CCI will still have support through community police program
o Victor will e-mail final report to Council members
 PRO Grant: approved
o Need to plan an information night before Jun 2018
o Michelle will provide a copy of the application
 Extreme heat in school:
o Michelle contacted MPP regarding the heat in the school during the spring and fall months.
o Ministry of Education has announced an additional $14 billion for building upgrades
 Parent Council booth:
o Proposed for grade 8 night and parent teacher interviews.
o Need to develop a one-pager about the Parent Council including meeting dates to hand out at the booth.

Principal’s Report: Mr. Paul Ambrose, interim principal while the current principal, Ms. Jinah Park is on leave.
 Staff contract – to ensure equity in the TDSB.
o Stems from school improvement plan
 Issues in school –
o No hats in school policy - hard to enforce
o Students going to the library, mall and community centre: students can be banned and receive a no trespassing letter for infractions
 Trey Anthony, producer of “Kink of my Hair” presented to students in Nov about “Find Your Passion”.
 Commencement: full house
 Math EQAO – Jan 2018
 PA day – Dec. 1
 Teach Assist – Parents/Students can access marks
 access with e-mail address
 Alliance of Black Students conference – keynote speaker, Paul Wall, CCI graduate

Present:  Jinah Park (Principal), Terri Williams (Chair) , Rory Frame (Co-Chair), Michelle Cole-Kennedy (Secretary), Kate Gosine (Co-Secretary), Kelly Dunn (Teacher Rep), Victor, Conrad, Pargat, Cordia, Donna, Jawad, Marlilou, Pirathieu, Rizona, Zuleikha, Rezwanur, Renee, Claudine, Sahada, Qasad and Yasmin and Student Reps.

  • Chair welcomed everyone to the meeting. Each attendee introduced themselves and indicated what grade their student was in.
 
Election of New Council:

Student Activity Council Update:
 
Principal’s Report: Update done by Principal Jinah Park
 
  • POR - Positions of Responsibility. 
    • 18 positions, 2 unfilled, 1 is for ESL/French/International program, the other for Arts
    • Class Caps – only 10% of school can go over the 10%
    • Academic 30% max, open course 29, Applied 23 and ESL 16
    • Cedarbrae is at 15% over cap, requested 3 teachers, if approved it will happen before October 31.  Students might have to move to a new teacher
  • SRO – School Resource Officer
    • Right now, there is none,
    • Surveying students and teachers if needed
    • Decision will be next November
    • Meetings 6-7:30pm @ Scarborough Village next week, tomorrow will be at Malvern
  • 1 Lockdown and 3 fire drills in each semester
  • Specialized and high-risk programs being reviewed
  • Cedarbrae CCI app, you can get it through google play/apple
  • Teach Assist – Parents/Students can access marks

    • Great Expectations Assembly held on the 11th to discuss the schools Code of Conduct
    • Unity Charity Assembly – after school program:  beat box, spoken word, video arts and dancing

    • Grade 9 Leadership camp – October 12, just 1 day this year

    • Assembly – Remembrance Day – November 10

Tropicana Community Services Presentation
  • Every Wednesday, youth club at lunch time
  • Looking for tutors

  • Workshops
HATCH.COM Presentation
  • Offers coding classes for ages 9-14 years old
  • Learn how software works
  • Robotics is part of the program
  • They provide the computers for the students to use
 
Other:
  • SAC Fee – what does it cover:  Yearbook, athletic fields, school photo id, agenda, school app, subsidizes students/clubs.  If multiple siblings can have one year book only and opt out so not all the siblings have to pay the fee.
  • Discussion around student dress
  • Discussion around upcoming Europe trip and copies handed out to interested parents
  • Discussion around students hanging out and smoking
  • PRO Grant was successful and will need to plan how and when it will be used
  • High school nights for the Grade 8 elementary parents
  • Working with Feeder schools for Cedarbrae
